Becoming a Christian is exciting and a new beginning.
Why is it that many people have little trouble believing in the supernatural but have difficulty believing in God? Most people I know love to watch scary movies, I know I always did. Movies that deal with possessed humans or movies that involve the devil seem to hold a special attraction. One movie “The Exorcist” scared me to death, but I have seen it multiple times. The Harry Potter books and movies have a huge following. Vampire movies are enjoying a resurgence and the “Twilight” series has been extremely popular.
Fortune tellers and “mediums” are more popular than ever. We long to know what’s about to happen and what the future holds for us. Talking with a passed loved one can be comforting to some. Many are willing to give someone claiming these abilities a large portion of their paycheck. I admit considering it myself.
Elizabeth, my wife passed away 2 years ago. Liz was a Christian, but she also had what is called the 6th sense by some. She didn’t ask for it and neither did she embrace it, but I tell you this: If she told you not to get on the plane, you’d best listen. Liz often told me that she wished she didn’t see things others couldn’t see or know things that were about to happen. She thought of this “sense” as a curse not an ability.
You too may know someone that seems to see or sense things about other people. I guess it’s not that uncommon. You may remember your mother seeming to know when you have done something wrong or when there is danger. We sometimes call that “a mothers instinct”. Few would argue that instinct does not exist. I have a fond memory about one of my daughters (who shall remain nameless). She, along with one of her friends (let’s call her Tammy) decided to skip school one day. Upon arriving home that afternoon her mother took one look at her and asked, “well, where did you and Tammy go today?” This particular daughter was a terrible liar so she sang like a canary and to this day cannot tell a lie (LOL). Our family life is filled with similar stories, and some stories that are more serious concerning this 6th sense…
Liz told me this “sense” could not be used for personal gain. It just did not work that way. When she saw something concerning a person or event, it came to her in an unexpected, random, and unwanted surge or rush. Sometimes while driving or just sitting next to her, I would hear her cry out as she “saw” something. Most times she would not tell me what it was, but the few times that she did?…. It was astounding…
My blog, The Daily Sinner is about my journey as a Christian. If you are one of the few who read my blog you know this post is a little different. Also, if you have read this far you may be wondering “what the heck does this story have to do with Christianity?”
Well, I digress back to the beginning of my post. How can anyone believe in the supernatural without believing in God? How can people believe in the occult, the devil, Satan, or even worship Satan and not believe in God? The answer is, they can’t. These distractions surely come from Satan and without God there is no Satan. All these things exist, but the only one that matters is God. Those other things exist in an effort to keep us from God…As always there is plenty written in the Bible to guide us.
2 Chronicles 33:6 – And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.
God loves us all and does not want us to be distracted or led away from him, but Satan will never stop trying until his time is done. Does this mean we can’t watch Harry Potter or a scary movie? Does this mean if we see a ghost or have a premonition we are not Christians? Absolutely not, but we must have sense enough to know what is most important, our salvation. This is how we will spend eternity. God does not want us to embrace wizards in place of Him or become mired in the occult. God “our Creator” wants us to love Him and live our life for Him, not Satan.
If you are lost in a life that has no direction, why not choose a full eternal life with Jesus? A life full of friends, love, and direction. It’s pretty darn easy….
John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life
