Becoming a Christian is exciting and a new beginning.
Well, I knew the answer was a symbol of love right off the bat since first of all I wear a cross around my neck for that reason; to show as a symbol of God’s love for me and all mankind. Additionally, John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life”. I wondered why Pastor Bobby was even asking this question in the first place: “Is the cross a symbol of Gods love or wrath?
Anyway, this was the question posed to us in advance of our Wednesday night Bible study. I felt this was a “piece of cake” and shouldn’t require much of my time beforehand. However, I did want to have more Bible verse’s to back up my answer, so I did what most of us do in this situation, I googled it!
Finding out you are wrong is never pleasant. Not completely wrong but wrong just the same. First of all, I don’t trust google as God’s Word, but it is a tool that helps me quickly find what I need to learn and where to find it in His Word. One of the first scriptures found relating to the subject is: Romans 1:18 “For the Wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men”. It took the suffering and death of the One without sin “Jesus” to bear the wrath of God for sinners like me. Most people don’t want to hear about the wrath of God; however, He wouldn’t be God if there were no consequences for sin. Rewards are great for those who honor, have faith in God, and believe in Jesus; therefore, there must also be punishment for those who do not.
Jesus took the wrath of God for all of us who believe in him, and he bore the wrath where? “On the Cross.” The only way to everlasting life in Heaven is through Jesus. Those who don’t or won’t accept this gift will most definitely experience the wrath of God.
It was news to me. I guess I had never thought about it before but the Cross does symbolize God’s wrath by showing there must be a price to pay for sin.
On the other hand, the Cross also symbolizes God’s unending love for us because he sent his Son to pay that price. We can accept this gift from God, believe, and be saved or we can reject Him. There are only two choices.
I know this is heavy information but above all; My hope is for every person I know and even people I don’t know to have the opportunity for a wonderful, love filled earthly life, and an eternal life. Additionally, I don’t wish to be guilty of sugar coating God’s word.
Romans 10:9 says: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved”.
This reminds me of the song “In Christ alone” where it stated that the “wrath of God was satisfied”. Jesus had to pay a price (He was the price) so that we become free. ?
This is what I think based on what I’ve learned. Jesus died to set repentant sinners free from bondage to sin and death. Becoming a Christian means being set free from sin and death, and brings release from fear of death
What a Mighty God We Serve!!!!
Yes indeed! Amen
